Traffic Accidents
If there is a traffic accident, remain calm and do the following: (1) Perform first aid if there are injuries. (2) Move the vehicles away from traffic so they do not become an obstruction. (3) Contact the police and ask them to send an ambulance, if necessary. (4) Get the name, address, telephone number, license plate number, and driver’s license number of the other driver(s) involved in the accident. (5) Contact your insurance company.

Dial 119
When you need an ambulance because someone suddenly becomes ill, or a fire engine in the case of a fire, dial 119. This number is answered 24 hours a day. In case of a fire, say kaji, or if there is an emergency, say kyukyu. Give the operator your location (and/or address) and name, and describe the situation. There is no charge for ambulance service, but they should only be used for serious emergencies. For less serious situations, please use your own car or a taxi.
<Fussa Fire Department> Address: 1072 Fussa, Fussa-shi
Initial Response
While waiting for the ambulance to arrive, check to make sure you have your health insurance card and some money. Go outside to meet the ambulance once you hear it approaching. When calling for a fire truck, yell out in a loud voice kajida! (fire!). Notify your neighbors and take initial firefighting measures until the fire trucks arrive. However, do not try to put the fire out on your own or put yourself in danger. Fires become very dangerous once they spread to the ceiling, so be sure to evacuate quickly.

Note
When using a mobile phone to report an emergency to either the police or fire department, be sure to tell the operator that you are calling from a mobile phone. Since the authorities may try to call you back, do not turn your phone off for at least 10 minutes. When possible, we recommend that you use a landline to report emergencies.
